Frequently Asked Questions

I saw a package of Lizzie's Lather at a shop, but I don't see it packaged the same way on your website. Can I order it from you with that special package?

I got a bar of Lizzie's Lather at a bridal shower that had the name of the bride and groom on the front. Can I order a personalized soap from you?

Yes! None of our products are made on an assembly line, and we package our soaps lots of different ways. If you've seen one our soaps in a different package and you can describe it, we make it for you. We will personalize soaps for baby showers, wedding showers, weddings, graduations or other special occasions for a small customization charge of $.50 per bar. Please use our Contact Form to let us know what you need.

What's the difference between "melt and pour" and Lizzie's Lather Handmade Soap?

Melt and pour soap is made from commercially prepared soap that's then melted by the manufacturer and poured into a mold to resolidify. In its molten state, fragrances and coloring may be added to enhance the soap. Lizzie's Lather Handmade Soap is made using a "cold process" just like pioneer women used to make soap for their families. We start with the finest oils and butters and add a lye solution, using a centuries old chemical reaction (saponification) to make the soap.

Does Lizzie's Lather contain glycerin?

Yes! Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the soap making process.

Why is Lizzie's Lather better than commercial soaps?

If you look on the packaging of many commercial soaps, you probably won't notice the word "soap" at all because these are actually detergents. Commercially available "soap," including the clear glycerin soap, is made with chemicals such as sodium laurel sulfate and animal products such as tallow. The commercial brands also remove the glycerin from their products because it Is more valuable than the detergent itself!

Do you use tallow in Lizzie's Lather?

No! Our soaps are all vegetable and we use no animal products of any kind.

I have sensitive skin. Can I use Lizzie's Lather?

Our soap is milder than most commercial soaps because it's natural soap, not a detergent. If you are sensitive to fragrances, it's best to try one of our All Natural soaps, which are made with no fragrances or colorings. As with any product, however, discontinue use if you notice any irritation.

What's the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?

Essential oils are the actual oils of plants extracted by compression or steam distillation. Essential oils can be very costly, as frequently it takes hundreds of pounds of plant materials to make a small amount of oil! Fragrance oils are synthetic and give us a wider range of fragrance choices. Fragrance oils can be formulated for complex fragrances that do not come from plants, for example, pina colada.

How do I care for my Lizzie's Lather bars?

It's best to store your Lizzie's lather bars in a cool, dry place. Lizzie recommends linen closets and dresser drawers because the bars also make your linens and clothes smell nice! While using your soap, the bar will last longer if you place it in a well-draining soap dish. Have you checked out our soap furniture?

My Lizzie's Lather doesn't lather as well at my house as it does at my mother's house. What's the deal?

The difference is probably a result of the kind of water you have. Here at Lizzie's Lather, we have a water system that both filters and softens the water and we can get a good lather with each bar of soap. Because our soap contains no detergents, however, it may not lather as well if you have hard water. Unfortunately, real soap is sometimes sensitive to the kind of water you use it in, and may not lather as well in hard water as it lathers in soft water. If you don't have soft water, just collect some rainwater the next time it rains. It's about the softest water there is! That's how my grandma got soft water to wash her hair.

What's your return policy?

Due to the nature of our product, soaps are not returnable for a refund unless there was shipping damage or there was a mistake in the order. We carefully inspect each shipment to make sure our products are not damaged and the order is complete. In the case of shipping damage, report the damage to the shipper and follow their guidelines for obtaining a reimbursement or replacement. If you refuse any order not involving shipping damages, you will be responsible for all shipping charges.

What are your shipping policies?

We charge a flat shipping and handling fee for each order based on the value/weight of the order. We use UPS-Ground or USPS-Priority. It ususally takes 2-3 days to package and ship your order since our products are not prepacked for shipment. We try to keep an adequate stock of soap on hand, but there may be times that our soap has not fully cured and we will have to delay shipment. If so, we will notify you of the delay. We try to indicate soaps that are not ready ship on our Products page by including an expected date the soaps will be ready.

What's your privacy policy?

We respect the privacy of our customers, and will treat any information you give us as strictly confidential. We will not give or sell confidential or personal information about our customers to any third party not directly connected with the transaction. We use the PayPal system for any credit card processing, using their fully secure servers.
